The original plot of Knight Rider did not include a car.  Instead, Michael wondered the streets with his mechanically enhanced jacket KITT.  Due to a lawsuit from the jackets manufacturer, the producers were forced to replace the jacket with a Pontiac Trans Am.  The jacket in fact was capable of much more than the Trans Am.
